Gendi J - Father of 2
-------------------------

kok....yah Alhamdulillah sih gagapnya hanya sebentar aja, lalu mulai

fun

Should I Worry About My Toddler's Stuttering?

Q :

My daughter just turned 3 and she's having a problem with stuttering. I'm
not sure if I should get her evaluated or not. Sometimes it's really bad and
sometimes you can't tell if she's having a problem. When should I start to
worry?

A :

In the usual progression of learning to talk, many 3-year-olds go through a
stage called normal disfluency, in which they repeat words and syllables and
use fillers like "uh" or "um." Normal disfluencies tend to occur when
children are tired or being rushed to speak, and they usually begin to
disappear when a child is 4 or 5 years of age. If over the period of six
months you gradually notice improvement, there's little reason to worry.
About 5 percent of children stutter at some point on their way to becoming
fluent speakers, and only 20 percent of these need speech therapy for
stuttering.

In some cases, normal disfluencies can progress into stuttering. Here's how
to tell the difference: With stuttering, instead of one or two repetitions
of a syllable, a child may repeat it four or five times such

as, "ca, ca, ca, ca, can..." or "m, m, m, m, mommy." In addition to
struggling with speech, stutterers show signs of increased physical tension
and often avoid speaking, in an attempt to hide their stuttering.

Also, children who stutter usually develop other mannerisms such as eye
blinking, tense mouth, looking to the side, and avoiding eye contact.
Children often stutter more in stressful situations, such as when put on the
spot to perform in front of an audience or when exposed to an unfamiliar
environment.

Here's how to help your child speak comfortably and confidently:

Connect before you direct. Make eye contact with your child while addressing
her. If her attention wanders, draw her back by saying, "...(name) I need
your ears, I need your eyes." Your child should be

comfortable looking at a person while talking.

Speak correctly to your child. Speak slowly and distinctly, and give her a
chance to take in your articulations so she can mimic your speech patterns.

Listen intently. Your daughter should feel that what she is saying is
important to you, so that she will talk more often. Invite her to tell
familiar stories, especially those that she tells the most fluently and
those that are not forced.

Identify the triggers. Keep a speech diary and notice what makes your
daughter stutter. Does she stutter when she's tired, hurried, anxious, or
nervous? Try to intervene in these situations.

Encourage but don't pressure. Resist the temptation to finish your child's
sentences for her or to hurry her along to the end of the sentence. Let her
make mistakes, as this is part of natural practice. Feeling rushed simply
contributes to more stuttering. Also avoid the temptation to correct,
criticize, or change the way she talks or how she pronounces the sounds of
words. She won't talk as often if she thinks she's making a mistake that
will lead to a lecture. Teach by imitation, not by correction.

Chart her progress. Make note of what situations trigger stuttering and
which days she is most fluent. Track her progress over a six-month period.
If she is stuttering less and becoming more fluent, there is no need for
speech therapy. If, however, she is stuttering more and speaking less
enjoyably, it would be wise to seek professional help before she begins
school.

Remember that speech is a social skill you want your child to enjoy, so she
should speak comfortably before speaking correctly. Children are completely
unaware of quirks in speech, especially if parents don't call attention to
them.

William Sears, M.D.

How Do I Deal With My Toddler's Stuttering?

Q :

My 2-1/2-year-old seems to be stuttering very frequently. She's noticing it
herself, and she'll put her fingers to her mouth and say, "Mommy, I can't
talk." Is there a need for me to be alarmed? Should I seek speech therapy?

A:

Between 2- and 3-years-old, many beginning talkers experience difficulties
in speech development. This is something doctors refer to as "normal
dysfluency" or "pseudostuttering." As your toddler is learning to

talk, expect to hear frequent hesitations, repetitions, or disruptions in
words as she tries to construct a full sentence.

What to Look Out For

Tiny talkers have a particularly hard time when they are excited, anxious,
tired, or in a hurry to speak. You'll notice your toddler hesitates or
repeats syllables when she feels pressured to answer a question, or talk
about a subject that she doesn't fully understand. Usually, your child will
repeat the first syllable of a word, such as "ki-ki-ki-kitten." When
children are stuck or struggling to construct a new and complex word, they
often replace the normal first syllable with "uh," such as:
"buh-buh-buh.bicycle." Also, expect some difficulty as your child is trying
to learn tongue-challenging sounds like "L."

On the other hand, true stuttering is often accompanied by signs that the
child is uncomfortable with speaking. Behaviors such as head-bobbing,
blinking, and avoiding eye contact are all common with stuttering. Although
your child is a little too young to be labeled a stutterer, the fact that
she is aware of not speaking properly suggests that your child might develop
a problem.

Keep a Speech Diary

To help determine whether your child is simply passing through a phase of
normal dysfluency or is truly stuttering, keep a speech diary. If you notice
gradual improvement over a period of six months - if she stutters less and
becomes more fluent - there will be no need for speech therapy. Her problem
is most likely normal dysfluency and not stuttering. If you have not noticed
a lot of improvement around the time she turns 3 - if she stutters more and
speaking seems less enjoyable - schedule an appointment with a speech
therapist. You should start before she begins school, since peers are less
likely to listen to stuttering as patiently as a parent.

A speech therapist may spot some quirks in tongue movements or other speech
problems, and map out a plan of treatment. These professionals are trained
at using games and playful techniques to slow down speech and calm tense and
dysfluent talkers. The speech therapist can then show you how to carry on
these speech-enriching games at home.

In the meantime, here are six steps you can take to help your child become
more comfortable in speaking:

Keep talking fun. Children need to learn how to speak comfortably before
they speak correctly. Let her experiment with lots of sounds without feeling
judged or pressured to speak correctly. Encourage her

self-expression in both speech and body language. Above all, don't call
attention to the fact that she stutters or speaks incorrectly.

Speak eye-to-eye. While talking to your child, make eye contact with her. If
her attention wanders, draw her back in by addressing her by name and
saying: "I need your eyes. I need your ears."

Listen attentively. You want your daughter to feel that what she has to say
is important. Invite her to tell you familiar stories, especially the ones
that she tells more naturally and fluently. Let her know that what

she is fun to listen to - again, with no judgment on the correctness of her
speech.

Listen patiently. Feeling rushed or judged simply contributes to more
stuttering. When your child stumbles during a sentence, try not to
react.Maintain your usual eye contact with her, and wait for her to finish.
Resist the temptation to finish your child's thoughts for her, or to hurry
her along to the end of the sentence. Let her make mistakes as she tries
different ways of forming syllables more comfortably.

Teach by imitation. Even well meaning corrections, such as telling her to
"start over" or "slow down," can make your toddler feel self-conscious.
Instead of correcting, simply repeat the sentence correctly yourself and let
her hear how it's supposed to sound. Speak slowly, distinctly, and give her
a chance to process your articulations so that she can mimic your speech
patterns. A 2-1/2-year-old may not pick up on these speech-enrichment
prompts, but they will be effective as she gets older.

Track triggers. Identify what I call tense-talking triggers. Does she
stutter when she is hurried, tired, anxious, or nervous? Is it talking to
strangers or being pressured to talk in an uncomfortable situation? Try to
intervene as a facilitator to ease the tension. The things that fill your
child's mind greatly affects what comes out of her mouth.

Bantuin ngasih link.. soalnya kemaren aku yang tanya :p

ini postingan Mbak Amy:

Koreksi dikit ya mba sarica..
Karotenemia

Berikut postingan dari ceu mon ..

Wortel mengandung beta karoten, yaitu zat cikal bakal vitamin A. Kelebihan
beta karoten dalam darah disebut dengan karotenemia. Kulit jadi kuning,

minggu setelah stop mengonsumsi wortel.
vitamin A dari sumber lain, seperti telur, susu, mentega, sayuran berwarna

http://pediatrics.about.com/od/yourbabyweekbyweek/ss/baby_wk_twtyfve_3.htm

As your baby eats more baby food, especially vegetables and fruits with a
deep green or yellow color, you may notice that her skin color also takes on
a more yellow to orange color too. It may be especially noticeable on her
palms, soles, and over her nasolabial folds (the skin that runs from the
bottom of your nose to the corner of your mouth). This is called carotenemia
and is caused by the high levels of beta-carotene in certain foods. It should
not be confused with jaundice, which would also make your baby's white eyes
turn yellow.Foods High in Beta-CaroteneIn general, foods that are high in
beta-carotene include yellow-orange fruits and vegetables and dark green
leafy vegetables.Examples of baby foods that are likely high in
beta-carotene include:
* butternut squash
* carrots
* corn
* papayas
* spinach
* squash
* sweet potatoes
* winter squash

Other foods that are high in beta-carotene, but which generally aren't found
in commercially prepared baby food include pumpkin, collard greens, beans,
egg yolks, and yams. Of course, once your baby starts eating table food or
if you are making homemade baby food, she may get more of these high
beta-carotene foods than infants who are just eating jarred baby food.No
treatment is necessary for carotenemia, although you can perhaps offer fewer
foods high in beta-carotene if you like. This does become less of a problem
as your baby gets older, especially as she becomes a preschooler. Mashing
and pureeing foods makes the beta-carotene in the food easier to absorb,
which may explain why it is more of an issue with baby food.

Update kabar teman mengenai Tumbang Anak (Was: Konselor Laktasi Sura

Posted by: "ita_sehat" ita_sehat@yahoo.com   ita_sehat

Thu Oct 13, 2011 8:36 pm (PDT)

All,
mau update status nih..
Thanks All.

Terima kasih All, maaf saya mengikutkan email terdahulu supaya nyambung.

salam sehat,
ita (ibuke Saka & Ambar)

Bukan curiga, tapi kan Dokternya belum tentu pro ASI, nah kalo Konselor Laktasi kan pasti pro ASI.. hehe.. Biar bisa cek-cek, posisi latch on-nya bener gak.

Assalaamu'alaikum wrwb

Dear SPs and Docs,
dingin...
Seakrang si dah gak konsumsi lagi tapi masih keringat dingin...

indikasi penyakit jantung... hiks... :'(

Mohon share nya ya...
Terima kasih banyak :)
